What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a state of dysfunction where the glucose in the blood does not get into the cell. This will then cause the blood sugar to rise which eventually leads to all sorts of other health issues like neuropathy, decreased circulation, increased susceptibility to infections, heart disease and kidney disease.

To get a clear grasp of how diabetes develops we need to take a look at the cell and its physiology. The whole goal of eating food is to eventually turn it into energy. The main fuel for the body is glucose. Glucose needs to be escorted into the cell via the hormone insulin. Insulin will sit in a receptor on the surface of the cell which then allows the glucose to pass through. With glucose finally inside the cell, it can be turned into energy in the form of ATP.

Insulin is like the KEY and the insulin receptor is the LOCK. During the second stage of diabetes, the insulin receptors begin to lose its sensitivity to the insulin hormone. Basically, the key doesn’t open the lock anymore.

The common methods of diabetes management

The best way to manage Type 2 non-insulin dependent is through diet and lifestyle. But that’s often overlooked nowadays and the docs just jump straight to medications. I don’t know for a fact, but I assume it’s because they think that the patient isn’t going to want to change their lifestyle. Many just want to pop a pill and get it over with. I don’t blame people for wanting the easy way out, but the easy way isn’t going to get you anywhere that you want to go. Unfortunately, the current method of medical treatment is just not effective.
